This is a great post. I knew it was going on but not to that extent. I was accused of selling a fake Morgan on ebay once. It was a 1929. Why bother faking a 29? After viewing this I will not buy bags of Morgans and Peace again. I have some Morgans now I think are suspect but I don't really know.

Sad. I always believed that collecting was sound investing as well.
These guys are ruining the entire market, and the full effects will not be felt for years to come.
I recently dumped a bunch of Morgans and some opther stuff for this very reason.
And I've been waiting for the Olympics to begin in Beijing so I can start unloading all my Pandas. I'm hoping the games may add a little China hype to the value of the coins. W'ell see.
Probably keep a few early year proofs I guess.

pandas are getting harder and harder to fake. The level of detail is getting quite staggering.

Very interesting - thanks for the post. Another good case of "caveat emptor" - let the buyer beware.

On a lighter note, our American women have some fakes of their own that even the Chinese are unlikely to match in quality and quantity anytime soon.:wink:

I have often wondered if the lines on a Maple Leaf (the tiny lines on the flats, said to be left by the CNC process when forming the dies) is an anticounterfeit device, acting like a sort of bar code in the background of the coins. Any thoughts?

I've also wondered about those lines on the maple leaf. It almost looks like a thin, tall cylinder of gold (like a pencil or sausage) was made, then cut into "slices" with a knife.

I noticed that my Chinese gold coins bought from APMEX have almost radial lines. The maple leaf lines run from left to right. The Chinese panda lines run from the center towards the rim...as if the coin was hand-struck by Romans.

I have a few Morgans bought at a local coin shop, as well as several peace dollars. Only thing that makes me a little suspicious is that the dealer makes occasional trips to Hong Kong and ....:shocked_ma: CHINA!

My peace dollars do seem a little "nickelish"... HMMMM....

Anybody know what the metal they're using is if it ain't silver?

After reading that I'm just depressed.

Yeah, kind of hard to fake something that never existed. You must mean a 29 Peace dollar.

Without damaging the coin, how can you tell a fake morgan from a real one?

PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!


All 90% has a melodious tone......the ping is more pleasing on 90% than 999 fine silver SAE(strange but it is what it is )

Are there other metals that can mimic this? Sure........ but it not worth the trouble or the cost to fabricate.

Wish I'd have seen this story yesterday. I just ordered 10 BU Peace Dollars this morning from Coast to Coast. Any ideas on how to check for counterfeits? oh yeah, ping

I have a mid 70's 50 peso coin that when I initially tapped it thought it was FOR SURE silver... what a nice ring to it! Alas, looked it up to find that pesos haven't been made of silver for quite a long time. Only cupro-nickel, and I believe, aluminum. Mine are nickel. Sound nice though, so don't be fooled.
